Course Content

  • A six lesson e-book packed with over 100+ pages of how-to insider information.
  • Step-by-step instructions on writing attention-grabbing query letters.
  • Successful query letter examples that landed assignments from $300 to $3,500.
  • Lots of extras including, industry handouts, helpful writing exercises, strategies for success, personal anecdotes, examples of what 'not' to do, links to freelance writer job sites, newsletters, helpful websites and blogs for writers, and much more.

How Does The E-Course Work?

Each Monday, you will be sent lecture material via email. Lectures will include all of the essential basics you need to start selling articles to magazine publishers. The first three weeks are heavy on lecture and the last three weeks will focus primarily on your writing. Each week, you will also be sent lots of extras, including handouts and helpful writing exercises, insider tips, strategies and advice, personal anecdotes, links to current writer's markets and freelance writer job sites, links to newsletters, blogs, and helpful websites for writers. No pressure - the writing exercises and homework is not mandatory, but students who do complete them will receive personal comments and suggestions for improvement. Also, I am happy to answer any and all questions (no matter how small) for the duration of the course.

Course Outline

  • Week One - The reality of a career writing freelance
The first step to creating a successful freelance writing career is to have a clear understanding of what editors want from writers. Simply put: editors want irresistible, highly-salable ideas. This week, you'll learn exactly how to come up with fresh, focused, timely, and creative ideas. I'll share some of my best 'light-bulb moment' story ideas, and take you through the path of two magazine stories from initial idea to the printed page.
  • Week Two - Study the magazine market
You'll learn how to analyze the various types of magazines to determine what types of articles they publish. You'll discover the most popular types of magazines and how to write for them. You'll find the best paying markets for beginners and learn how to select the right magazine for your work. And you'll learn the secrets to breaking into the "big" markets.
  • Week Three - Stand out from the crowd
The best way to ensure your pitch stands out in an editor's inbox is to cite a top-notch professional or expert source, an up-to-date research study, or a news peg in your query (pitch) letter. Finding compelling information like this is easy - if you know where to look. This week you'll learn the secrets to finding the "extras" that will help you land an assignment.
  • Week Four - Write the perfect pitch letter
Writing a solid, attention-grabbing query letter is the best (and sometimes only) way to get your work in front of an editor. This week, you'll explore the anatomy of a successful query letter and learn how to draft a clever, eye-catching query letter of your own.
  • Week Five - Pitch practice
This week, you'll revise and polish your query letter(s) until it is first-class and (hopefully) rejection-proof. By the end of the class, you'll have completed one or more perfectly polished attention-getting query letters that you can confidently submit to publishers.
  • Week Six - Pitch perfection
During the final week, you'll hone one or more query letters to perfection. You'll determine the correct editor at your target magazine and you'll submit your query to him or her. I'll also show you how to reslant your query for submission to additional publications.
